The List

The snow has finally melted around Square One. Now, Maiko & Toby have are putting together a long list of things "to do" before next Winter. Here are a few things that they are working on:

1) The final coat on the exterior walls (see previous post) which we hope to have finished by the end of May. In order to do that, we need to set up the scaffolding, tear apart a few areas of the wall that either need repairing or need to be re-done because they weren't done right the first time. This includes the rain flashing in many areas like over the beams and around the windows. More earth plaster will then be added to the walls to make them almost perfectly smooth. As of right now, they are wavy and, while we like this effect, need to made straight in order to best accommodate the lime plaster we'll be putting on at the end. After the walls are made straight, we'll then scratch/scrape the walls in order to have the best cohesion to the next coat of lime plaster. After the first coat of lime is put on, we'll then add the "tosashikkui" (special lime plaster) to the NW & NE facing walls to add extra protection against wind driven rain. In short, the next 6~7 weeks are going to be busy.

2) After the above is completed and all the scaffolding, extra sand, extra clay, extra straw bales, blue sheets and cement mixer are taken off the property, we'll then be able to start the work on the carport and landscaping of the ground around Square One. In order to be ready for this, Toby & Maiko are doing a lot of planning now so that we can get started as soon as the area is clear of all the above mentioned stuff. We'll discuss what we are thinking for the landscaping and carport in subsequent posts. Stay tuned.

3) We still have a few places to finish up inside Square One so those are still on the list, as well.

It's going to be a busy Spring, Summer & Fall. However, it should also be fun to get outside and do the landscaping and carport work. We won't be as rushed as we were last year and can really take our time to do something we both really like and can enjoy for many, many years to come.
